Indanthrone Blue
Gamblin announced a change in formulation for this color in late 2023— not a change in pigment composition exactly (still PB60), however painters in the comments of the Jackson’s article on the topic have noted a change in hue. Descriptions indicate that the new color is more of middle blue (greener as opposed to purpler) than the previous Gamblin Indanthrone which had a more warm/purple-leaning undertone. Jackson’s created a comparison of the old and new colors which may be helpful in gauging color differences: https://www.jacksonsart.com/blog/2024/03/05/a-closer-look-at-gamblin-colour-changes/. We tried the older formulation and it is a beautiful purple-leaning blue. This is a color where the filminess and semi-translucency sometimes noticed in Gamblin paints was particularly appealing. The older formulation was an enchanting denim color when spread thinly.
A previous description: ”Indanthrone Blue is an excellent, all-purpose blue with a beautiful, smoky glaze. This deep blue color may create beautiful deep oceans or dark stormy night skies ideal for landscape artists.“ -Gamblin Oils. Gamblin categorizes this color as warm. However after the new formulation, comments on the Jackson’s site indicated that it was far more green-leaning than the previous Gamblin Indanthrone (pre 2023).
