Highly recommended, this perfect Munsell 8 is totally neutral. Part of their series of pure neutral greys, this color has been calibrated to a value system which has its origins in studies of human perception. This paint is helpful for visualizing a value 8 on the palette, setting the key for the lights in a painting, and as a control for mixing the elusive value 9 in the notes leading to white. In mixes, bear in mind it contains titanium white, which has its own mixing curves when released into the wild. Said in other words, we wouldn’t exactly say it doesn’t affect the hue of other colors when mixed to lower their chroma. Williamsburg's N8 has charming characteristics in mixes and the slight grayness yields surprising tones which are slightly different than most companies convenience pastels. Out of the tube N8 is purely neutral on the Munsell scale. As a bit of backstory, this neutral grey series was out of requests from the Rational Painting forum. We are indebted to the artists who led that initiative for helping to bring these about, and most of all to Williamsburg, who has made our Munsell value dreams come true. In short this a fast, easy and affordable way to put a lilting, pure neutral Munsell 8 on your palette.
“Four Neutral Grays (N2, N4, N6, and N8), ground in alkali-refined linseed oil and using a combination of Titanium White, Lamp Black, and small touches of various iron oxides (Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna, Raw Sienna) to pull the otherwise too-cool mixtures back towards neutral. The Williamsburg Grays match the Munsell values nearly flawlessly across the spectrum.”
