Genuine Vermillion/Cinnabar
Despite vermillion’s charm, we found the lightfastness tests done by the legendary Gunzorro to be very helpful. His tests of genuine vermillion displayed darkening in bright sunlight over time: https://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/topic/vermilion-test/page/5/
Holbein offers four colors named Vermilion. There is this Vermilion, a Vermilion Hue, a Chinese Vermilion, and a Transparent Vermilion, which are all different colors. While we can’t call out every single toxic paint it’s worth noting that mercuric sulfide is very toxic. It is helpful to check with the retailer to make sure that the label says PR106 on the tube you buy (even if you order through a link here) to be sure you are getting genuine PR106 if that is what you seek. Holbein’s Chinese Vermilion is also labeled PR106. We are not yet sure what the differences are between these two paints. We cannot comment on the toxicity of all the paints on Paint List but if one stands out we’ll mention it. Always seek the expertise of independent toxicologists for the art materials you use and ask the manufacturer for this data as well. There is some online debate about the toxicity of PR106 and we would recommend seeking out the opinions of toxicologists.
