Cobalt Chromate
In regard to the older formulation with PB35: This cerulean has a nice hue. Ceruleans can vary a lot in color, so this one was the bluer variety (not the green kind). It’s a bit confusing as Gamblin described it as a blue with a green quality, After working with it, we warmed up to the Gamblin take on this color. Cerulean is a great pigment for realistic work as it mixes differently from Phthalo blue. Like most Gamblin colors this has an impasto quality.
A previous description of this color reads, ”Cerulean Blue is a unique blue with a cool, green side and is ideal for creating serene water or a tranquil sky in a seascape painting.“ -Gamblin Oils. Gamblin categorizes this color as cool. It is possible this color may have had a formulation change (at any rate, the Gamblin brochure we downloaded in 2023 listed it as PB35, and the 2022-2023 Gamblin catalog listed it as PB36. Blick lists the pigment in 2024 as PB35, while Gamblin lists it in 2024 as PB36). The most current listing as of May 2024 from the Gamblin site is listed as PB36.
