Michael Harding Lemon Yellow

This paint is not your average Lemon Yellow, as this color is an enchanting, gorgeous pale yellow that leans very helpfully to the greens. However this paint is toxic. It goes beyond our capabilities at the Paint List to comment on every pigment that has toxicity, however this one stands out. Please consult the manufacturer MSDS for safety information. We also recommend that everyone do their own research about every paint they work with regarding safe handling and proper precautions. That said, this is an interesting color. It is hard to find single pigment paints in this exact color region. This is a very lemony yellow that is cooler (greener undertone) than Michael Harding’s Lead Tin Yellow Lemon, which has a warmer light middle yellow hue. Michael Harding’s Lemon Yellow is higher chroma than Michael Harding’s Lead Tin Yellow Light and much cooler.

“Inorganic – Sometimes known as Barium Yellow, as it is Barium Chromate. It was introduced into painting after the Lead Chromates, circa 1820. Unlike Lead Chromates, though, Barium has proven permanent and non-reactive. Most colourmen consider this yellow obsolete, and I’m probably the only one still making it. By itself, it’s an acidic looking yellow with weirdly green overtones. Its low tint and covering power mix with Magenta and the cooler reds to produce modulated greys artists sometimes seek for certain passages of flesh painting. This is the only yellow chrome paint that doesn’t discolour.“ -Michael Harding Oils
