Two Reds and a Disappearing Pink!

Two Reds and a Disappearing Pink!

Artist paint is a wild world, which is why we designed Paint List.

Here are three interesting reds for oil painters: Pyrrole Red, Permanent Crimson, and Ultramarine Pink (bound in Safflower oil).

Williamsburg's Pyrrole Red is a high-power red with high chroma and opacity. This red is an absolute stunner.

Permanent Crimson is a transparent PR177 is great for getting the deep notes in the reds at a high saturation point. Like everything named Permanent it is not completely permanent, though it hangs on to an ASTM I in testing. It's helpful to note that Williamsburg's is a bit stiffer than some brands, however this is a solid choice.

And finally, one of our favorites, the mysterious Ultramarine Pink in safflower oil. This color does not really have a perfect parallel in other brands. This red-violet does desaturates greens effectively and may be just what one needs for landscape painting.

Update: PV15 Ultramarine Pink by Williamsburg is now gone. Check out our article on recent Pigment Discontinuations for more.
