Introducing...A Basic Pigment List for Artist Paints

Supercharge your palette with a list of pigments!

This article contains the pigment codes commonly found in artist paints.

Why do you need pigment codes? They are like the runes on some elvish door which, if you can decode them, will tell you important information about opacity, lightfastness, and even color mixing behaviors. From these humble little letters, worlds of information can be found. This list is just a starting point- many more resources can and should be consulted.

Our listing of pigments will continue to morph and change as we add new articles.

Here’s how to use it: once you identify the pigment code from a paint tube, on desktop, you can do a Command+F for that code and find it pretty quickly.

We’re excited to add more articles with notes from the Great Book of Color on various pigments and link them to this directory.

May the rainbows from its pages illuminate your painting practice!🎨
