This is a transparent, bright, and clear red-orange. Disazo Condensation Scarlet is fairly rare in oils, but it makes beautiful high chroma tints. However, the version in oils by Schmincke Mussini is a slow drier. In watercolor washes, it looks a bit like PR255, but it is more staining, and Schmincke assigns it less lightfastness than PR255. The masstone of PR242 is fairly deep (like most transparent or semi-transparent colors). It also has good to very good lightfastness, though in watercolor, Schmincke gives it three out of five stars, meaning lightfast but is not the highest degree of lightfastness. Industrial Organic Pigments praises its lightfastness and weatherfastness, but mentions in some applications, it does not quite reach the heights of PR168, which is interesting context. Overall this is a lovely color.

Excellent to Very Good
Thought to be ASTM I (excellent) but not officially rated. Bruce MacEvoy noted that there may be a slight fall-off in tints.
Transparent, Semi-Transparent
We found this color to be quite transparent
Lower Concern
Treat all pigments and paints with studio safety protocols.
Very Slow
One of our varieties of PR242 was among the slowest-drying paints we have ever encountered. One manufacturer lists 6-18 days drying time, but it seems our sample was even slower.
Very Fine
Disazo condensation
