Genuine gamboge is made of a resin from various species of Garcinia trees, particularly the G. hanburyi species. It is a transparent golden yellow.
In terms of lightfastness, unfortunately genuine Gamboge fades badly. In addition to its lightfastness issues, Artiscreation mentions that it is poisonous.
Today, the pigment for traditional gamboge is rarely used. In paints, the name Gamboge now applies to a wide range of other yellow-orange pigments.
